Liverpool excite £39m target as Reds learn why Martin Zubimendi rejected transfer

A round-up of the latest Liverpool news as the Reds arouse a £39m target and Gary Neville proposes why Martin Zubimendi has rejected a transfer from Real Sociedad.

Liverpool are clear that Saudi Pro League target Alisson Becker is ‘going nowhere’
Liverpool are showing a firm and clear position that Alisson Becker is ‘going nowhere’ in the summer transfer market amid interest from the Saudi Pro League. That is according to David Lynch, who notes that Anfield chiefs are adamant that the Brazilian is staying on Merseyside.

Saudi Arabian chiefs see Alisson as one of the top targets to improve the Pro League despite him being under contract with Liverpool until 2027. The 31-year-old is one of if not the best goalkeepers in the world with his shot-stopping abilities and reactions often game-changing.

Injuries reduced Alisson’s minutes last term but the Novo Hamburgo native remains the No1 at Liverpool. He featured in just 28 Premier League games last season for eight clean sheets, marking only the second time in the goalkeeper’s Reds career that he played fewer than 33.

Liverpool offer Giorgi Mamardashvili a 10-year plan to secure his transfer
Liverpool have presented Giorgi Mamardashvili with a 10-year plan for his future at Anfield as the Reds target the goalkeeper’s transfer from Valencia. That is according to Levante EMV, which reports that Anfield chiefs have submitted an opening offer just shy of €30m (£26m).

The Merseyside natives’ offer was inclusive of potential future add-ons and failed to tempt Valencia to sell. Los Che believe Mamardashvili is worth €45m (£39m) after starring at Euro 2024. But a new offer is in the works as Liverpool see Mamardashvili as Alisson’s successor.

Convincing Mamardashvili of the move will be much easier as Liverpool excited the Georgia international with their plans for a long-term contract. The Reds also intend to secure him a loan in the Premier League to become accustomed to the division before replacing Alisson.

Gary Neville thinks Martin Zubimendi pulled a U-turn on Liverpool
Martin Zubimendi of Spain during the UEFA EURO 2024 final match between Spain and England at Olympiastadion on July 14, 2024 in Berlin, Germany.

Gary Neville believes Martin Zubimendi pulled a U-turn after telling Liverpool that he would agree to a transfer from Real Sociedad. The Manchester United hero also believes it is likely that FC Barcelona or Real Madrid spoke to the Spaniard and put him off the move to Anfield.

Liverpool were increasingly confident about their chances of convincing Zubimendi to leave Real Sociedad this summer. But after advancing in talks with the Euro 2024 winner, the deal fell through and Zubimendi is now expected to stay at the Anoeta Stadium for another year.

Zubimendi has spent his entire career at Real Sociedad as an academy graduate. He is also one of Europe’s top holding midfielders, so it would have been quite the coup if the 25-year-old signed for Liverpool. But Neville now feels the rug was pulled from underneath the Reds.

“For this to have happened to Liverpool, he has said yes to them and he has then changed his mind late,” Neville told the Stick to Football podcast. “There’s no way – we have been there at different levels – he’s definitely said yes to them and then changed his mind.

“I never trust Barcelona and Real Madrid either being involved with something and saying, ‘We’re going to come, we’re not ready yet but we’ll take you’. That’s always over there and if they come, you’re dead.”
