Liverpool would have to pay £80m and break 22-year habit to sign rising star

An odd story has surfaced linking Liverpool with an exorbitant move to sign 22-year-old Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite.

The Reds need to add another centre-back to their ranks after Joel Matip left the club upon the expiry of his contract at the end of last season.

Now, with Arne Slot yet to add any new signings to the squad he inherited from Jurgen Klopp, reports are suggesting that Liverpool are considering an expensive late transfer swoop.

Everton respond to suggestion Liverpool could sign Branthwaite
This is Anfield reports that on the weekend, the odds of Liverpool signing Branthwaite dropped to “as low as 2/1” with Everton themselves commenting.

Sources at Everton, cited by the Liverpool Echo, insist there has been “zero contact” with their Merseyside counterparts over a deal to transfer Branthwaite to Anfield.

Those close to Branthwaite have reportedly been “left bemused” by the strange reports.

There are myriad reasons why Branthwaite is unlikely to join Liverpool
Notwithstanding the fact that Liverpool haven’t signed a player from their city rivals since Abel Xavier swapped Goodison Park for Anfield in 2002, it seems unlikely to expect Branthwaite to join the Reds this summer.

City tribalism aside, it would also cost around £80 million to sign the 22-year-old, according to TEAMtalk.

While Liverpool are more than likely to not sign Branthwaite, they are in need of reinforcement at centre-backs.

After Jarell Quansah was taken off at half-time for Ibrahima Konate during Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Ipswich Town on Saturday, fans have once again voiced their concern over the state of the squad ahead of the close of the summer transfer window.
