Martin Zubimendi team-mate 'rejects' Liverpool too as £51.2m transfer plan falters

Liverpool have 'launched a £51.2million bid' for one of Martin Zubimendi's team-mates after the Real Sociedad star turned down a proposed move to Anfield this summer, according to Spanish publication AS. Zubimendi was expected to touch down in the Premier League after helping Spain to Euro 2024 glory at England's expense and it was Liverpool who were seemingly front-runners for his signature.

However, a bombshell update on Monday night signalled the end of their £60million pursuit for the Sociedad midfielder. The Reds are not expected to turn their attentions to signing an alternative No.6 this summer.

However, as per AS, they might be interested in bringing Takefusa Kubo to Anfield instead. Kubo, who has also been subject to interest from the lucrative Saudi Arabian market, is a 23-year-old winger who has earned rave reviews in Spain. Kubo is said to have turned both proposals down. He has a release clause around the £51.2million-mark - while the ECHO understands Liverpool ruled out a chase for the player themselves internally.

The forward signed for Sociedad from Spanish giants Real Madrid two years ago. Kubo - capped 35 times by Japan at senior level - has totted-up 159 appearances in La Liga over his career with 22 goals and 18 assists.

Elsewhere, reports from Fabrizio Romano, through social media, argue Lutsharel Geertruida is locked in discussions with Aston Villa over a proposed transfer this summer. The right-back played for Arne Slot at Feyenoord.

Geertruida was flagged up as a potential target for Liverpool. He made more appearances (127) under Slot than any other player during his reign with the Eredivisie side - winning the title in 2022 and KNVB Cup last season.

Villa have the player high up on their shopping list. However, a deal might be complicated to strike up as Villa need to sell Diego Carlos first to generate funds and make room in their squad.
