Mikel Merino squad omission explained as Arsenal chase deal, latest on Liverpool target Martin Zubimendi

Real Sociedad have become key players in the transfer market as Arsenal and Liverpool eye Mikel Merino and Martin Zubimendi respectively.

Spain secured Euro 2024 glory with a win over England in the final and it’s perhaps no surprise that a host of their players have been involved in the transfer scene.

Alvaro Morata has joined AC Milan whilst Dani Olmo is set to re-sign for Barcelona from RB Leipzig.

Nico Williams has been in demand too but HITC understands that he only wants to join Barcelona if he is to leave Athletic Club.

Spare a thought for Real Sociedad though, who have already lost defender Robin Le Normand to Atletico Madrid.

Real could now lose two more players as the Premier League elite look to raid the San Sebastian side.

Mikel Merino out of Real Sociedad squad
Midfielder Mikel Merino has become a man in demand just weeks after scoring a dramatic winner to beat Germany at Euro 2024.

The former Newcastle United man has become Arsenal’s top target to bolster Mikel Arteta’s engine room.

HITC understands Merino has rejected a new contract and wants to sign for Arsenal this summer.

The 28-year-old returned for training with Real this week having been on a break since Euro 2024.

However, Merino has been left out of Real’s squad to face Union Berlin on Friday.

Arsenal fans have been left encouraged, believing that Merino has been left out in order to finalise a transfer.

That doesn’t appear to be the case though.

Diario Vasco now claim that Merino has endured ‘slight overload’ after training this week and is being left out as a precaution.

The report goes on to reiterate that Merino is not absent because of a transfer, but rather for a ‘physical reason’.

Martin Zubimendi in as Liverpool chase continues
Losing Merino as well as Le Normand would be bad enough but star midfielder Martin Zubimendi could be moving on too.

HITC understands that Liverpool are pushing to sign Zubimendi to bolster Arne Slot’s midfield options.

We understood that Zubimendi was reluctant to leave Spain this summer but Liverpool appear to be changing his mind.

Real have still named Zubimendi in their squad to face Union though, seemingly not expecting a transfer to be completed any time soon.

Liverpool will keep pushing for a deal but, as things stand, Zubimendi will be in contention to line up against Union Berlin on Friday.
