Report: £20m player could finally decide to sign for Arsenal in the next few hours

Arsenal are still hunting for a new central midfielder as Mikel Arteta aims to bridge the gap on Manchester City.
TBR Football understand that Arsenal want to sell Thomas Partey this summer and remain confident of finding a new club for the Ghana international.

Regardless of whether the Arsenal No.5 stays or goes, Mikel Arteta wants a new central midfielder, and one of the Spaniard’s top targets could soon give the Gunners the green light…

Arsenal target Mikel Merino set to make decision imminently
A story from El Diario Vasco now reveals that Mikel Merino is set to decide on his future within the next few hours.

The Spanish news outlet believe the Real Sociedad No.8 has not yet been the subject of a bid from Arsenal, although the Gunners are effectively just waiting for the UEFA Euro 2024 winner to give them encouragement by deciding on a move to the Emirates Stadium.

It comes after The Times claimed that Arsenal want Merino signed as soon as possible, with Football London adding that a deal could even be done for just £20m as the 28-year-old has just 11 months remaining on his contract.

The situation has only become more complicated for Arsenal in recent days – however – as Liverpool attempt to sign Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad.

Understandably, the Basque outfit do not want to lose both of their starting midfielders, so Arsenal are presumably sweating on Merino’s decision, and surely want an answer soon.

Mikel Arteta has a backup option who is available for free
If a deal to sign Merino collapses for Arsenal, there is an alternative just waiting to join a new club – Adrien Rabiot.

The France international is currently a free agent after deciding to leave Juventus.

Arsenal are believed to be admirers of Rabiot – with Arteta under the impression his experience could help the squad – although nothing has materialised yet as the Gunners wait on Merino.

Be sure to keep a close eye on this situation, as today could be the day Arsenal get a response from the 28-year-old on his future.
