Merino has said his goodbyes to teammates and staff over in Sociedad and is now ready to come to England and seal a move to Arsenal.
The signing of Merino will mean Arsenal have now landed two big-money signings this summer.
Riccardo Calafiori also arrived from Bologna, but in the main, it has been pretty quiet and there has been no blockbuster arrival like when Declan Rice signed last year.
However, things might have been different for Arsenal had they not simply baulked at the price of one apparent target.
Arsenal tried to sign Ebere Eze before baulking at asking price and moving on to Mikel Merino
According to Miguel Delaney and his latest Reading the Game newsletter for The Independent, Arsenal did indeed try to make a move for Ebere Eze.
However, like the rest of the Premier League, the Gunners are believed to have been stunned at the price of the deal.

Crystal Palace are known to be asking for north of £60m to even consider selling Eze, with Steve Parish digging his heels in.
The Eagles have already lost Michael Olise this summer and there is a growing feeling that Marc Guehi could end up at Newcastle.
Selling Eze as well, then, would be a tough pill for Palace fans to swallow.
Eze would flourish at Arsenal under Mikel Arteta
Mikel Arteta has shown himself to be quite the manager at Arsenal as the likes of Kai Havertz, Ben White, and more have all shone.
The idea, then, that the ‘unstoppable‘ Ebere Eze becomes an Arsenal player is enough to make Gunners fans excited.
Of course, it probably won’t happen now with the move for Merino heading close to completion.
But still, Eze is a player for Arsenal fans to keep a lookout for and if he doesn’t go this summer, then he’s definitely one for Arsenal to revisit next summer.
