The Magpies are continuing their pursuit of Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi, while it has also been reported that Newcastle United are ‘actively looking’ to sign a right winger before the transfer window closes on August 30th.
As for Arsenal, they are closing in on a deal to sign a former Newcastle United player.
Mikel Arteta has been keen to bring in a new midfielder this summer, and there were even rumours that Arsenal wanted Bruno Guimaraes. Of course, that deal did not happen, but Arsenal are now on course to sign Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad.
Merino left Newcastle in 2018, but is now set to return to the Premier League six years later. He is a more complete player now, and will hope to boost Arsenal’s title charge.
However, he is not the only Spain international that the Gunners want to sign.

Arsenal linked with late move to sign Nico Williams
According to the Independent, Mikel Arteta would now like to bring in another attacker before the transfer window closes next Friday.

The report states that Arsenal’s top target is Athletic Bilbao superstar Nico Williams, with the North London side considering a move to bring in the 22-year-old winger.
However, the Independent add that Arsenal are aware that a deal will be very difficult to complete, as it looks as if Williams is happy to stay at Athletic Bilbao, despite his £48million release clause.
That was heavily implied recently when Williams was given the number 10 shirt at Athletic Bilbao following the departure of Iker Munian.
Newcastle United were interested in Nico Williams
As Arsenal ponder a late approach for the Euro 2024 winner, Newcastle will wonder what might have been.
The chance to sign Williams has been and gone for Newcastle United, with the attacker now very much out of the Magpies’ reach. When he leaves Athletic Bilbao, he is going to join an elite club that is challenging for league titles season after season and can pay massive wages.
Sadly, Newcastle United are not that club right now.
It was reported earlier this summer that, while he was discussed in recruitment meetings, Newcastle understood that Williams’ wage demands would be too high for them.
That is a shame, as Williams is the type of marquee player that Toon fans would love to see in attack alongside Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon. He is a player that Newcastle have had their eye on for more than a year, but a deal has passed them by.
It may pass Arsenal by too, as all signs appear to point towards Williams staying put this summer. But while the likes of Arsenal might be able to revisit him as a target in the future, a lot will need to change on Tyneside for Newcastle United to re-enter the conversation.
