The Gunners begin their 2024/25 Premier League campaign in exactly a week’s time, but they could still do with reinforcements in a couple of areas of their pitch.
As things stand, Mikel Merino is Arsenal’s top midfield target, and the North Londoners have been trying to get this deal over the line for a few weeks.
Now, an offer is said to have gone in, but that is unlikely to be accepted.
Arsenal’s offer for Mikel Merino is not enough
Arsenal have been pretty smart in identifying Merino as their target.
The Spaniard has entered the final year of his contract at Real Sociedad, and he has decided against renewing it this summer.
Merino has decided he wants to join Arsenal and has even agreed personal terms with Mikel Arteta’s side over a move this summer.
Now comes the hard part for the Gunners – striking a deal with Real Sociedad.
Mundo Deportivo have revealed that Arsenal have slipped in a proposal of €25 million (£21.5m) to sign Merino, but that fee is considered low.
The Spanish side are hoping for €35 million (£30m), which is apparently what Atletico Madrid offered to sign the ‘spectacular‘ Euro 2024 winner earlier in this window.
As things stand, Arsenal are €10 million (£8.5m) short of reaching an agreement. It remains to be seen if the two sides can find a way to meet in the middle and close the deal.
What Real Sociedad have now done to convince Merino to stay
Merino has arguably been the most consistent midfielder in La Liga over the last three years.
The Spaniard is one of Real Sociedad’s most important players, and they are hoping to keep hold of him despite interest from Arsenal.
In an attempt to ruin Arteta’s move, Sociedad have offered big money to Merino to convince him to stay and sign a new contract at the club.
However, Merino has already told the club that he wants to join Arsenal, and Sociedad’s new offer is unlikely to change his stance.
