Report: Liverpool considering move to sign £40m Chelsea player who Enzo Maresca started in Premier League opener

Liverpool are looking at a number of potential options ahead of the window closing next week and could make a move for a new defender as part of the process.

The summer has been painfully quiet for the Reds this summer, with no new signings for Arne Slot thus far.

However, a win over Ipswich last weekend and a steady enough performance have calmed some of the panic that was building with some fans.

Still, a new face or two wouldn’t go amiss before the deadline and according to reports, Liverpool could make a move on Chelsea.

Liverpool considering bid for Levi Colwill with Joe Gomez future uncertain
According to reports from GiveMeSport, Liverpool are considering a new defender ahead of the deadline.

And among the list of players Arne Slot likes is Chelsea star, Levi Colwill.

The report from GMS claims that Colwill, as well as Mohamed Simakan and Piero Hincapie are players on Liverpool’s list.

Liverpool’s interest in a new defender has been common knowledge all summer but nothing has come of it just yet.

However, with Jarrell Quansah taken off at half-time last week and Virgil van Dijk still yet to sign a new contract, the Reds board may feel a new centre-back is now needed.

Further, there are question marks over the future of Joe Gomez.

It would seem odd for Chelsea to move Colwill on given Enzo Maresca started him in the season opener last weekend.

However, you just never know with the Blues right now and given they hold an interest in Gomez, who knows what might happen here.

Further, Liverpool’s interest in Colwill is well known. Indeed, TBR revealed in April how Liverpool had told Chelsea they’d happily take Colwill off their hands.

For Liverpool, Levi Colwill would represent an upgrade on Gomez. A left-footed centre-back who is rated at as much as £40m by Chelsea, he’d give Liverpool a long-term option at the back.

Whether or not Chelsea will sell a player who is part of the first-team set up, though, remains to be seen.
