Report: The Spanish media are saying something very different about Mikel Merino and Arsenal after talks in London

The Mikel Merino transfer saga between Arsenal and Real Sociedad is still ongoing.

The Gunners have been keen to strengthen their midfield since the summer transfer window opened, but they still haven’t done it.

It is no secret at this point that Merino is Arsenal’s top target, and they have been pushing to sign him since Euro 2024 came to an end over a month ago.

Fabrizio Romano revealed that Merino is on the verge of joining Arsenal after talks between the two clubs on Wednesday.

However, Diario Vasco have reported something very different.

No agreement yet between Arsenal and Real Sociedad for Mikel Merino
Merino is the perfect player for Arsenal’s midfield.

The Spaniard is excellent on the ball, even better in duels and Merino will finally replace Granit Xhaka at Arsenal if he does come in.

Mikel Arteta really wants to sign Merino, and he has been pushing his club to sort a deal out. Talks have been ongoing for several weeks now but they haven’t reached a conclusion.

Diario Vasco have published a report that contradicts Romano’s claim that Merino is on the verge of joining Arsenal.

The report confirms that the Gunners and Real Sociedad did have a face-to-face meeting for the transfer of Merino, but no deal was struck.

It has been revealed that Arsenal’s latest offer still does not meet the Spanish side’s €40 million (£34m) demand, and there remains a difference in valuation between the two clubs.

As things stand, the Spanish media outlet’s report suggests that Merino is not close to signing for Arsenal. However, the two clubs are set to meet again on Thursday to see if they can reach an agreement.

Arsenal have a tough decision to make
Merino is definitely a fantastic player, and he will surely improve Arsenal if he joins them.

However, the Spaniard has entered the final year of his contract at Real Sociedad and he is 28 years old already. When you consider those factors, £34 million feels like a lot of money.

Arsenal now have to decide what they will do if Sociedad stand firm on their demands for Merino.

The Gunners will need to make a tough call on whether they will overpay and meet Sociedad’s demands or walk away from the table this late in the window.

If they do the latter, it will be interesting to see which other midfielder they will go after.
