Spanish football expert says why he 'doubts' what David Ornstein has said about Martin Zubimendi and Liverpool

Liverpool look set to make their first decisive move of the summer transfer window.

The Reds have sat tight all summer long so far, waiting for the right moment to enter into the market.

As it turns out, the perfect point was on Wednesday afternoon, when reports surfaced that Liverpool were pushing to sign Martin Zubimendi.

Since then, things have progressed slightly. Reports from Spain have claimed that Real Sociedad are becoming resigned to losing Zubimendi.

From England, as ever, the reliable reporting has been done by journalist David Ornstein. If it comes from Ornstein, you can usually hang your hat on it.

Graham Hunter ‘doubts’ David Ornstein
In the ever changing world of football, something that has transformed beyond almost any recognition is how transfers are reported on.

Social media sites like X have forever altered the way news reaches supporters, with journalists desperate to be the first to break the big moves – or even the small ones.

In that landscape, Ornstein has marked himself out to be one of the very best around. The journalist waits until things are fully formed before reporting and does not appear to speculate at all.

Nevertheless, it turns out that not everyone is happy.

Another journalist who is an expert in his field is Graham Hunter. Over the decades, the Scotsman has become a true authority on Spanish football.

As a result, Hunter has been sought out for his expertise on Zubimendi as a move to Liverpool potentially looms.

One of those to call upon the journalist was Anfield Index, who asked Hunter to give the view from Spain on the news that the 25-year-old could leave his boyhood club for Liverpool.

“When David Ornstein, who I’ve never met, said ‘Sociedad sources’ I thought ‘well, I’m sorry David, I immediately doubt you’, because no one calls them Sociedad,” he replied. “It’s La Real, or Txuri-Urdin.”

Will Martin Zubimendi join Liverpool?
While Hunter is unquestionably a much respected voice when it comes to Spanish football, we’re not sure about this.

It is irrelevant in the scheme of things what Ornstein did or did not call Real Sociedad. He is reporting for an English audience and whether he used the correct monikers has no bearing at all.

Besides, the journalist’s call that La Real were expecting Zubimendi to go was echoed from an outlet not only from Spain, but from San Sebastian itself.

Ultimately, though, there has been no movement at all over Thursday so far. Liverpool supporters may have been expecting some kind of confirmation that Zubimendi has chosen them, but that is yet to arrive.

Having been burned this time last year over their pursuit of Moises Caicedo, fans may now start to get twitchy. The longer the wait goes on, the higher the chance that bad news is coming.
