Suspects named as two more men charged with violent disorder

Three more people have been charged after violent disorder in Merseyside. Daniel Carrigan, 41, of Preston Grove, Anfield, was charged with violent disorder and criminal damage in Southport.

Luke Moran, 38, of Leybourne Avenue, Birkdale, was charged with violent disorder. Both men will appear at Liverpool Magistrates' Court this morning, Thursday, August 15. Two more men have also been arrested on suspicion of violent disorder in Southport.

They are aged 38 from Southport and aged 32 from Platt Bridge, Wigan. Both have been remanded in custody, police said. The arrests and charges bring the total people arrested to date to 74, and the total charged to 41.

Philip Prescott, 38, of Sefton Street in Southport, was sentenced on Tuesday, August 13 at Liverpool Crown Court to two years and four months after he previously pleaded guilty to violent disorder. Also jailed the same day was David Frank Hill, 38, of Bianca Street, Bootle, who was sentenced to two years after pleading guilty to violent disorder in Liverpool city centre.

The third man jailed was Gareth Metcalfe, 44, of Cambridge Gardens, Southport, who was sentenced to three years and four months after pleading guilty to violent disorder in Southport. Honorary Recorder of Liverpool Andrew Menary KC said last week that riots were "used as a pretext for widespread violence, intimidation and damage".

Following the riots in Merseyside, disorder spread to towns and cities around the country. Police had made 927 arrests and 466 people had been charged across the country by Sunday afternoon. Merseyside Police said they were encouraging anyone with information to contact them via Public Portal (mipp.police.uk) or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
