Riccardo Calafiori has been the Gunners’ only senior summer signing so far, but Mikel Merino has agreed a deal to join Arsenal from Real Sociedad as he looks set to sign a four-year contract.
Mikel Arteta is yet to reinforce his attack this summer and the Gunners have been linked with a host of names, with Nico Williams being one of them.
And now, Fabrizio Romano has delivered the latest update on the transfer saga amid claims that Arsenal are plotting a late move for Williams.
Romano says there’s nothing concrete between Arsenal and Nico Williams

Romano believes the Spaniard is set to remain at Athletic Bilbao this summer, having also turned down an approach from Barcelona earlier this summer.
“What I’m hearing as of tonight is there’s nothing concrete,” Romano said on his YouTube channel.
“The expectation of those close to Nico Williams and Athletic Bilbao is for him to continue there.
“Arsenal appreciate Nico Williams but all top clubs in Europe do. Mikel Arteta is a big fan of him but as of tonight, there are no active negotiations.”
Williams has a £48m release clause in his contract and is tied down at the club until 2027.
Do Arsenal need Nico Williams?
With Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard capable of playing on the left wing, Arsenal seem adequately stocked in that position.
However, Williams is a potential ceiling raiser who could come in and start games immediately, making him an intriguing option.
The 22-year-old scored a goal and provided two assists in Spain’s triumphant Euro 2024 campaign, earning himself a spot in the Team of the Tournament.
Most of Europe’s elite are keeping tabs on Williams and a £48m fee for a player of his potential seems like a bargain, so Arsenal’s interest comes as no surprise.
With time running out in the transfer window and Bilbao seemingly unwilling to sell, it remains to be seen if they press ahead with a move for Williams or pursue alternatives.
