Most would have anticipated that Arne Slot would have made the first signing of the new era at Anfield by now. But despite constructing an opportunistic deal for Anthony Gordon back in June and then pursuing Martin Zubimendi more recently, nothing has come to fruition.
Names continue to fly around, including that of Giorgi Mamardashvili. But Liverpool will need to get a move on if it is to make any additions before the transfer window shuts.
Despite the resumption of the Premier League, Liverpool still has a little bit of time to close deals. But major divisions around Europe have agreed on an August 30 date to shut their respective transfer windows, leaving sporting director Richard Hughes with a ticking clock.
The Premier League, EFL, Bundesliga, La Liga, Serie A and Ligue 1 are all conforming to the same dates. This at least means that Liverpool won't need to deal with the threat of unwanted bids from fellow European giants, although Saudi Arabian sides will have the opportunity to make a late approach like the one it put together for Mohamed Salah last season.
But in terms of incoming business, August 30 is the last chance for Liverpool. The transfer window will slam shut at 6PM EST, by which time any relevant paperwork must have been submitted to the league.
Liverpool Unveil New Signing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain at St Georges Park on August 30, 2017 in Burton-upon-Trent, England.
Liverpool's last major transfer deadline day activity was signing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from Arsenal in 2017.
Deals which are very close as the deadline looms can benefit from a limited extension, provided the outline of a deal is submitted to the Premier League. But Liverpool is already in uncharted waters by leaving business this late, and will surely hope not to be active as the minutes drain away on deadline day.
Only time will tell. But in the meantime, focus turns to the pitch, where the existing Liverpool squad already offers plenty of cause for excitement as the Slot era gets underway.
Liverpool.com says: Transfer deadline day has been more or less an irrelevance to Liverpool for a good few years now. It's been nice to conduct business with an air of such serenity.
But things could be different this summer. Slot has needed time to assess the squad, international tournaments caused delays, and a move for a key target collapsed: the ingredients are there for some good old-fashioned deadline day drama.
