Which Martin Zubimendi Alternatives Could Liverpool Sign?

There was logic behind Liverpool’s pursuit of Martin Zubimendi. Likened to Xabi Alonso, the Real Sociedad midfielder was targeted for the composure in possession he offers in the centre of the pitch. Arne Slot needs a new number six for his playing style to work at Anfield and Zubimendi would have fit the bill.

Of course, the Spain international ultimately rejected a move to Liverpool, instead choosing to stay at La Real. Slot, however, still needs a midfield rhythm builder. The Reds are widely expected to enter the transfer market to sign such a player before the summer transfer window closes at the end of the month - but who should they target?

Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes has been linked with a number of Premier League clubs this summer including Liverpool. The Brazilian made an impact at Molineux last season and has the defensive instincts and technical ability to operate at the base of the Liverpool midfield. Gomes has the skill set Slot is looking for.

Crystal Palace v FC Nantes - Pre-Season Friendly
LONDON, ENGLAND - AUGUST 11: Adam Wharton of [+]
Adam Wharton enjoyed a remarkable rise in the second half of last season after joining Crystal Palace from Blackburn Rovers in the January transfer window. Indeed, the 20-year-old was so impressive he earned a place in England’s Euro 2024 squad. Many view him as the best young number six in the Premier League.

It seems inevitable that Wharton will move on from Selhurst Park in the near future, but Crystal Palace would demand a large transfer fee for its prize asset. The Eagles already lost Michael Olise to Bayern Munich this summer and would be reluctant to lose another key player, especially to a Premier League rival like Liverpool.

Bruno Guimaraes is another Premier League number six who would be perfect for Slot’s system at Liverpool. However, the Brazilian is deeply embedded in Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United team and the St James’ Park club would surely require an offer of over £100m to even consider letting go of the midfielder.

Genoa v FC Internazionale - Serie A
Morten Frendrup is playing during the Serie A [+
Morten Frendrup would certainly be a cheaper option, but the Genoa midfielder is unproven at the elite level. There are also doubts over Frendrup’s passing ability which would be a problem for what Liverpool need in the centre of the pitch. Similar concerns linger over France international Adrien Rabiot who is a free agent after leaving Juventus.

Liverpool might have to bide its time to find the number six that Slot wants. Ryan Gravenberch played in the deep role against Ipswich Town on opening day of the Premier League season and so it’s possible the Dutchman will continue in that position for the time being. Ultimately, though, Slot will need a new number six, whether that is Zubimendi or someone else.
