Why Man Utd's Chido Obi-Martin signing hasn't gone through yet

Manchester United look set to steal an Arsenal wonderkid from right under the Gunners’ noses - but there's still work to do.

The Red Devils have been busy in the summer transfer busy so far having signed both Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee for significant fees. However, there is another exciting bit of business in the works.

Man United have been linked with a move for Arsenal’s youngster Chido Obi-Martin. The 16-year-old striker had become one of the most exciting starlets to come out of the Gunners’ academy over recent years having plundered 32 goals among the under-18s last term. Even better, he was available at the end of his Arsenal contract.
While it appears that a deal should be straightforward given he is a free agent, there has been a significant delay in getting the youngster through the door. According to The Athletic, the delay is down to Man United being locked into negotiations with Arsenal.

While Obi-Martin is a free agent, the Red Devils still have to pay a compensation fee due to his age. It is suggested that talks are anticipated to end in an agreement without the need for negotiations to go to a tribunal.

The deal will then go through a formal Premier League ratification process, which could take a few weeks. Once the move is approved, it is expected that Obi-Martin will go into Man United’s under-18 side, with the potential to move into the under-21 group.

Depending on how he performs, he could then potentially be given the opportunity to train with the club’s first-team. Man United were not the only side linked with him, with Bayern Munich also interested but the Red Devils look likely to win the race for his signature.

The move would be a significant coup for Ten Hag given how highly rated Obi-Martin is. Speaking about his talents, ex-Arsenal star and now academy coach Jack Wilshere said: "He's been exceptional.

“I've said it before but credit to everyone at the club and at Hale End for the work that they have done with him. He's adapted so well, helped the team massively at times. Also, credit to his teammates too because they serve him so well, and he's grateful for that."

Away from Obi-Martin, Man United chiefs are still working on adding a new midfielder to the squad. Sander Berge of Burnley has emerged as an option over recent days.
