The centre-back has been in-and-out of the starting line-up for his national team, but he got the nod last night (local time) after an injury to Eder Militao.
Gabriel had a nervy start, but he grew in confidence as the game went on. He looked assured with the ball and made a terrific goal-line clearance.
Here is how Globo Esporte reacted to his performance
They wrote: “Too nervous in the first half, when he got involved in two disputes with the interference of the referee. He also risked little with the ball on his foot but saved a goal over the line.“
Gabriel won 100% of his ground duels and 50% of his aerial challenges against Ecuador. He had 101 touches with a passing accuracy of 90%.
The 26-year-old was not dribbled past, but he did commit one foul. He should be pleased with his clearance off the line which ensured the victory.
Brazil ended a three-match losing streak in the World Cup qualification with a slender 1-0 win.
The result has moved them to fourth in the standings with 10 points from seven games. They will now face Paraguay on the road on Tuesday night.
Magalhaes is likely to make the starting XI for that game too. He will then travel to London to prepare for the derby at Tottenham Hotspur on September 15.
Arsenal will be aiming to beat Spurs at their stadium for the third successive campaign.
