£27m Arsenal signing already up for club award after making immediate impact

Arsenal welcomed five new signings to their squad this summer and one in particular has hit the ground running.

The Gunners enjoyed a busy summer all the way up until the final few hours of deadline day, when they completed a last-gasp loan deal for Chelsea’s Raheem Sterling.

Arsenal also welcomed goalkeeper Neto on the final day of the window, and the duo joined up with Riccardo Calafiori, David Raya and Mikel Merino as new arrivals.

The latter joined Arsenal in a £27m deal from Real Sociedad but Merino suffered a shoulder injury during his first training session and is set to miss between six and eight weeks.

The Gunners have enjoyed a bright start to the season but they dropped points against Brighton in their final match before the international break.

The North London outfit have now opened the voting for their August Player of the Month and one summer signing has been nominated.

£27m Arsenal signing up for club award
Arsenal have named four contenders for their first Player of the Month award of the season and summer signing David Raya is up for the award.

Raya spent last season on loan at The Emirates and completed a £27m permanent deal to join the Gunners this summer.

Mikel Arteta decided last season to favour the Spaniard shot-stopper over Aaron Ramsdale, who has since joined Southampton in a £25m deal.

Raya is one of four contenders for the award alongside Kai Havertz, William Saliba and Bukayo Saka.

David Raya has been brilliant at Arsenal
Eyebrows were raised when Arteta made the decision to drop Raya for Ramsdale, but his decision has been justified by the Spaniard’s performances.

Raya cemented his starting spot last season and he has started the new campaign in brilliant form.

At £27m, Raya’s fee now looks like a bargain for Arsenal and he is quickly becoming one of the Premier League’s best goalkeepers.
