Arne Slot admitted the goalkeeper could be missing for the weekend’s Premier League clash, having been struggling with a minor injury following Tuesday’s Champions League clash with AC Milan. The Reds’ head coach confirmed Alisson had missed training following the win in Italy, having picked up the problem before that game.
Now, it has emerged that the 31-year-old has missed training again, putting major doubt over Liverpool’s No.1 goalkeeper. Sky Sports reporter Vinny O’Connor has confirmed Alisson was absent from the AXA Training Centre on Friday.
Speaking during his press conference, Slot said: "It happened a bit before the Milan game but after he felt it more and more."
Alisson’s absence from training all but confirms he will be missing for tomorrow’s game at Anfield, when the Reds will be looking to return to winning ways in the Premier League following last weekend’s surprise defeat at the hands of Nottingham Forest.
Caoimhin Kelleher will likely deputize for the Brazilian, just as he did on plenty of occasions last season, with Alisson’s hamstring problems seeing him miss 10 league games.
It hasn’t yet been confirmed what the nature of the goalkeeper’s injury is this time, with Slot not giving too much away during his press conference.
With the games coming thick and fast though, Liverpool will hope it’s not another extended absence for their No.1. The Reds face five games before the next international break in October, including their second Champions League game as Bologna visits Anfield on October 2.
Liverpool.com says: Another injury to Alisson will come as a major blow to Liverpool. Kelleher is obviously a more than able deputy to the Brazilian. but any side would feel the effect of missing the world's best goalkeeper.
Hopefully, this will prove not to be another prolonged absence like last season, but it does raise the concerns over Alisson's fitness going forward. With Giorgi Mamardashvili set to arrive from Valencia next summer, serious questions may need to be asked about Alisson's place if he continues to have injury problems this season.
