Ex-FIFA official stunned by Jarred Gillett decision amid Tottenham v Arsenal controversy

Noel Egan was surprised to see Jurrien Timber booked for his challenge on Pedro Porro as Arsenal beat Tottenham 1-0 on Sunday (15 September).

The ex-FIFA official doesn’t understand why referee Jarred Gillett produced a yellow card.

Timber’s challenge on Porro in the first half left the Spurs defender on the ground and sparked a mass brawl between the two sets of players.

However, Egan – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – didn’t see anything wrong with the challenge.

“It is two players coming together, it is a North London derby, it is going to be give and take,” Egan said.

“Therefore, I don’t see anything wrong with that. Timber plays the ball, the trajectory of the ball continues and Porro comes onto it.

“It looks to me as if Porro has gone down because he has turned his ankle, more than anything else. As a result, I’m surprised that even a yellow card was shown.

“I don’t think there was anything wrong with the challenge. Unfortunately, he hurt his ankle, but that is about it.

“This is a North London derby, you expect the challenges to be robust. Therefore, as long as they are not out of control, and they are good hard tackles, that is what you come to expect from this match.

“In that situation, I see nothing wrong with Timber going for the ball. I wouldn’t say he has done anything in that situation to inflict damage on the opposition player.”

Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham must bounce back after defeat against Arsenal
Whether Timber had been booked, not booked, or even sent off, it feels as though it wouldn’t have made much of a difference.

Spurs hardly laid a glove on Arsenal and put in a rather lacklustre performance considering the occasion. Therefore, Ange Postecoglou has a lot of work to do.

As a result, the Australian won’t have any interest in the incident between Porro and Timber but instead will be focused on how to get his side back on track.
