When the Spaniard first joined the club in 2019, Arsenal had spent several seasons without playing Champions League football, never mind, being at the top of the table.
Ahead of the international break, fans could be getting some very good news as they try to get over the frustration of Declan Rice’s red card during their draw against Brighton on Saturday.
Mikel Arteta’s contract
Sources have confirmed to HITC that Arsenal are hoping to make ‘significant’ progress with Arteta‘s contract during the forthcoming international break.
The 42-year-old’s current deal expires in 2025 and, although there is nothing to suggest that either side are thinking about anything other than an extension, the club want it to be put to bed.
Arsenal do not want Arteta’s future to become a topic for conversation that could dominate discussions for the rest of the season if nothing is agreed.
Arsenal are also aware that, since his appointment in 2019, he has emerged as one of the biggest managerial talents in Europe.
The former midfielder was assistant to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, before his former club offered him his first foray into the mad world of football management.
With that in mind, HITC is told that talks are set to intensify in the coming weeks and it could result in a new deal by the end of the month.
Arsenal’s summer transfer window
It was a productive and efficient one for the London club, with some big names entering the building and fan favourites leaving.
Raheem Sterling’s loan move to Arsenal from Chelsea was the one that grabbed the headlines because it was concluded on transfer deadline day.
But Arsenal also secured the transfer of Riccardo Calafiori, who went on to make his debut during the win at Villa Park, they brought in Neto to replace the departing Aaron Ramsdale.
And also added fresh legs to their midfield by signing Mikel Merino, who ended up getting injured during his first training session with the club.
