‘Failure’: Midfielder Arsenal sold for £8m admits he made a mistake leaving the Gunners

The grass isn’t always greener in football, and players who have left Arsenal have often learned that the hard way.

Alexis Sanchez had a disastrous time after leaving Arsenal for Manchester United, while Pierre-Emerick Aubemeyang’s career went on an immediate downward trend when he left the Gunners.

However, this isn’t just a modern trend.

Indeed, speaking on The Lineup, Emmanuel Petit has now been discussing his departure from Arsenal, and he’s admitted that he made a mistake leaving the Gunners.

Petit says that he left Arsenal for £8m in pursuit of a Champions League trophy with Barcelona, but ultimately, that move was a failure and he may have made the wrong choice leaving Arsenal.

Emmanuel Petit regrets leaving Arsenal
Petit spoke about his departure from Highbury.

“When I left Arsenal I joined one of the best clubs in the world at that time for the same reason I wanted to win the Champions League, but it was a failure. Did I make the right choice? I’m not sure about that.” Petit said.

Emmanuel Petit should’ve stayed at Arsenal
Petit is right, he should’ve stayed at Arsenal.

There wasn’t a team in world football that suited Petit better than Arsenal at that point.

Arsene Wenger had built an incredible team with a tight French cohort, and that duo of Petit and Patrick Vieira was almost impenetrable.

However, Petit didn’t back Arsenal to go on to win the Champions League, and he left for Barcelona.

That move did backfire as Barcelona would finish fourth in La Liga that season and be dumped out of Europe at the group stages.

Arsenal are currently in a position where some of their star players may get calls from the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, PSG or Bayern Munich in the coming years, and any player in that position would be wise to read Petit’s story before potentially leaving the Gunners.
