‘He’s the one’: Ian Wright suggests Liverpool could win the Champions League if they sign £53m player

Excitement is building around what this Liverpool team could be under Arne Slot.

The Reds have got off to a fantastic start this season, and after thrashing Manchester United at Old Trafford, fans are starting to wonder how far this side could go.

Liverpool competed on four fronts last season, and while a quadruple is an ambitious target, Liverpool aren’t that far away from being able to compete for the biggest honours.

Speaking on The Kelly and Wrighty Show, Owen Hargreaves and Ian Wright have been discussing Liverpool’s ambitions this season.

Hargreaves says that Liverpool need a number six, but if they get the right player, they could win everything – including the Champions League

Adding onto that, Wright says that Martin Zubimendi could be just the player Liverpool need.

Wright and Hargreaves shared their verdicts on potentially signing the £53m man.

“Do you think they need a number six?” Hargreaves and Wright were asked.

“To win the Champions League, they need a Rodri, well not a Rodri because he will probably win the Ballon d’Or. But they need somebody top level, and if they get that I think they could win everything,” Hargreaves said.

“If they could get Zubimendi, he’s the one you think could be that guy, I think he could be that guy,” Wright said.

Liverpool aren’t far away
It may sound hyperbolic to speak about Liverpool in these terms after just a few games, but based on what we’ve seen so far, the Reds aren’t far away from being Champions League contenders.

Most key members of this squad have been there and done it before, and many of those players such as Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold are playing some of their very best football.

There is that hole in terms of a defensive midfield player, and against a top European side, that could be exploited.

However, with the January transfer window just a few months way, perhaps Liverpool could get their man, whether that is Zubimendi or someone else.

The Reds could be onto something very special this season.
