The Reds were disappointingly quiet over the summer, signing only Federico Chiesa for the upcoming season.
Goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili was also signed – and given the fresh injury news about Alisson Becker that move is looking even more shrewd – but the Georgian won’t arrive until 2025.
Having kept their powder dry for so long, there remains a chance that next year is a big one in the market for Liverpool.
If they fail to sort out the contracts of Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah, then the Liverpool owners are going to have a huge rebuild on their hands.
Part of that will obviously be looking for the right player to take over from Salah. And it seems that after registering their interest in Anthony Gordon this summer, Liverpool are not giving up.

Liverpool still very keen on Anthony Gordon
Gordon was close to joining Liverpool over the summer as Newcastle battled to fight off their PSR problems.
In the end, the Magpies sorted things out another way and did not have to sell their £45m forward.
MORE LIVERPOOL STORIES
That did not seem to especially bother Liverpool, for whom Gordon always felt more like a target for 2025.
Since then, the 23-year-old has been in great form for Newcastle and is set to enter into contract talks to extend a deal that ends in 2026.
With fresh terms seemingly soon to be signed, some might think that Liverpool would be deterred. But according to journalist Graeme Bailey, that is not the case at all.
“My understanding is that Newcastle have been keen to engage Gordon since the end of the window,” Bailey exclusively tells Rousing The Kop. “I believe the talks are due to start and will get going this week.
“From what I’m told Liverpool have let Gordon know it’s a long-term interest,” adds the reporter.
“It’s not if you sign then next year our interest is gone. They wouldn’t see it as a snub if he signs a deal to become the best paid player at Newcastle.
“Gordon signing a new contract won’t impact their interest in the player, Liverpool still really want him.”
Anthony Gordon deal set to include release clause
This is still one of the most fascinating stories to come out of the summer transfer window this year.
Liverpool clearly want Gordon, but you do wonder whether part of that could be down to sensing that a bargain could be had with two years left on the Scouser’s contract.
According to Bailey, though, there could still be a chance that the Reds can get Gordon for a somewhat affordable fee.
Even if the former Everton man does commit his future to Newcastle, the journalist says a new contract would almost certainly include a release clause.
“I don’t think Liverpool would blame Gordon for signing a new deal and getting a huge wage increase,” says Bailey. “It’s widely expected that any new deal would have a release clause in it anyway.”
