Liverpool 'eye' Martin Zubimendi alternative as Manchester United legend approves forward

Liverpool moved to the top of the Premier League table on Saturday night after a hard-fought 2-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers. It means the Reds' defeat to Nottingham Forest earlier this month remains the only blot on Arne Slot's copybook since succeeding Jurgen Klopp.

Slot's side were far from their best at the Molineux but returned to Merseyside with maximum points after goals from Ibrahima Konate and Mohamed Salah either side of Ait Nouri's equaliser earlier in the second half.

Draws for Manchester City and Aston Villa over the weekend ensured the Reds will start the next round of fixtures at the top of the table, one point ahead of Pep Guardiola's side in second place.

But you already knew that, didn't you? So let's have a look at some of the Reds news you might've missed over the last 24 hours.

Liverpool eye Zubimendi replacement
Liverpool are reportedly eyeing a move for PSV Eindhoven defensive midfielder Joey Veerman - but face competition from Arsenal and Newcastle United.

The 25-year-old Dutchman has had an impressive start to the season with the Eredivisie outfit and, as a result, has caught the attention of several Premier League clubs.

According to Give Me Sport, Veerman could be the answer to Liverpool's defensive midfield problems after they failed in their pursuit of Real Sociedad's Martin Zubimendi in July. The report claims that there is a "growing feeling" in the Netherlands that this will be Veerman's final season at PSV as his stock continues to grow.

Veerman joined PSV from Heerenveen in 2019 and has less than two years remaining on his current deal.

As it stands, though, Liverpool seem well-placed in the defensive midfield position following Ryan Gravenberch's strong start to the season. The 22-year-old has started all six Premier League games for the Reds and was named Man of the Match in Saturday's victory against Wolves.

Ex-Manchester United ace hails Liverpool loanee
Michael Carrick believes Liverpool loanee Ben Doak has got the right attributes to succeed at Middlesbrough after the forward scored his first goal for the club this weekend.

Doak, who joined Liverpool from Celtic in 2022, made the move to the Riverside Stadium last month and opened the scoring in Saturday's 2-0 win against Stoke City.

Asked about Doak's performance after the game, Boro boss - and ex-Manchester United ace - Carrick said: "I thought he showed what he’s all about. He’s a real threat and we’re blessed down that side with him, Izzy and Marcus [Forss] coming back. We’ll be able to have a freshness to keep them sharp and bright to have a real impact when they do play. He definitely did that today.

“He’s young, but if you’re good enough you’re old enough. He hasn’t played an awful lot of football but he’s got character and personality and when he’s come on he’s proven really eager to have an impact and develop. I wasn’t surprised today because we kind of expected that from him. We’re really excited to see what he can do from here while with us."

Earlier this month, Doak - who had been sidelined for much of 2024 with a meniscus injury - made his debut for Scotland.
