Liverpool have a problem because €51m target wants to join Real Madrid instread

Liverpool remain interested in Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi, even though the player has reportedly expressed a preference for joining Real Madrid. According to TBR Football, the Reds were among several clubs, including Arsenal, vying for Zubimendi’s signature over the summer after his standout performances at the Euros.

Despite a strong push to bring him to Anfield, Zubimendi turned down Liverpool’s offer in favor of staying with Sociedad, as he eyes a potential move to Madrid in the future.

Liverpool’s midfield situation
Jurgen Klopp and the Liverpool board had identified Zubimendi as a key target to strengthen the club’s midfield.

Following the departure of several key players, including Fabinho and Jordan Henderson, Liverpool sought a player with defensive solidity and tactical intelligence—attributes that the 25-year-old Spaniard embodies.

Zubimendi’s calmness on the ball, positional awareness, and ability to break up play made him an ideal candidate for Liverpool’s system, which values midfielders who can link defense and attack while maintaining possession.

His versatility in both deep-lying and box-to-box roles would have made him a valuable asset at Anfield.

However, despite Liverpool’s strong interest, Zubimendi chose to remain at Real Sociedad, preferring to continue his development in La Liga. While the decision was a blow for the Reds, the club remains hopeful of reigniting talks should the situation change.

Zubimendi’s desire for Real Madrid
According to TBR Football, one of the primary reasons Zubimendi rejected both Liverpool and Arsenal was his desire to join Real Madrid. The Spanish giants have long been admirers of the midfielder and are believed to be targeting him as a potential replacement for Luka Modric, who is expected to leave Madrid at the end of the current season.

While Zubimendi’s preference for Real Madrid may complicate matters, it hasn’t deterred Liverpool from keeping tabs on the player’s progress. Klopp and his staff remain interested in securing Zubimendi’s services should Madrid opt to pursue other targets.

The road ahead for Liverpool
Liverpool’s midfield revamp has been a priority following the departures of key players, and while Zubimendi turned down a move this summer, the club is likely to continue exploring options. The Reds are always on the lookout for players who can strengthen their squad, and Zubimendi’s talent is undeniable.

Even with stiff competition from Real Madrid and other Premier League clubs, Liverpool will remain in the race for Zubimendi, knowing that a player of his quality could be instrumental in their quest for future silverware.
