Liverpool transfer news as $66m Xabi Alonso protege 'wanted alongside Jeremie Frimpong'

Liverpool will be able to buy players again in just 99 days' time. That is when the January transfer window opens and there will be plenty of rumors to get stuck into before then.

The main priority for Liverpool should remain at the base of its midfield to add more quality depth there for Arne Slot. Ryan Gravenberch has started the campaign brilliantly, of course, but he can't play every minute of every game.

Here is the Liverpool.com verdict on the transfer gossip to emerge around the Reds today. Both players being linked at the moment are from the same club: Xabi Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen.

As an attack-minded full-back, Frimpong's name is likely to crop up a few times when it comes to possible successors, should one be required. Most thought he would leave Leverkusen this summer but he ended up staying. And ideally, of course, Liverpool wouldn't need to bother with signing a replacement because Alexander-Arnold has penned new terms.

Liverpool.com says: The sooner Alexander-Arnold commits to Liverpool, the better. The speculation needs to be ended and there is only one way in which that will happen.

Exequiel Palacios (Bayer Leverkusen)
According to Caught Offside, Liverpool could snap up Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Exequiel Palacios in 2025. Having missed out on Real Sociedad ace Martin Zubimendi in the summer, plenty more defensive players are going to be linked with moves to Anfield instead, even though no alternative was sought.

Chelsea and Arsenal are also said to be interested in Palacios. The South American would supposedly be valued at $66m (£51m/€60m) but it is worth noting that he has a questionable injury history, though he is a good player.

Liverpool.com says: Another midfield body would be no bad thing for Liverpool to have, for sure. Whether Palacios is the right fit, though, is another question. There are a few question marks over him and he is unlikely to be a game-changer.
