The Spaniard has been in charge of the Gunners since 2019, and announced himself to the world by winning the FA Cup in his first season in charge. Last year saw the Gunners develop into legitimate title contenders as they pushed eventual winners Manchester City to the final day.
Since Arteta renewed his contract, Arsenal have gone on to beat Spurs in the North London derby and are firmly in the chasing pack for the Premier League.
David Ornstein reveals reason for Mikel Arteta’s short term deal
According to David Ornstein of the Athletic, the reason why Arsenal and Arteta settled on a three year deal instead of a longer term contract is because that is what Arteta’s camp asked for:
“‘Some people have said to me why didn’t it go on for longer, you know it’s a bit of a shot term, they’ll have to be renegotiating within a couple of years.
“But that’s what they both wanted, it seems a very harmonious camp.”
A short term deal with a view to renegotiating in a few seasons is brilliant from Mikel Arteta; he is currently one of the best coaches in Europe and will only get better. Ornstein also added that clubs like Barçelona were interested in Arteta this summer:
“There have been reports linking him to Barcelona. Barcelona have made admiring glances in his direction in recent times.
“There have even been suggestions that Manchester City might have him at the top of their list for when or if Guardiola leaves. Let’s see on that front, I’ve got no information.”
Arsenal boss is the ‘man for the future’
Arteta was excited to sign on and continue the project he began after leaving Manchester City. He said this after the contract was announced:
“I feel extremely proud, very excited and am looking forward to what is coming next. I’m proud to be where I am and have the relationships that I have with everyone at the club.
“I feel extremely lucky to work every single day with good people and the ambition we have here. I feel very inspired, I feel challenged, I feel supported and I want to do much more than what we’ve already done together.
“Together with the players and everyone at the club, we are looking forward to the coming years, with our supporters, who have emotionally transformed the club and the team. Our supporters have transformed individuals and we are different now. You can tell that we are different and for me, that is down to them. We look forward to continuing the journey together.”
Everybody at Arsenal was delighted that a deal was struck, with Co-chair Josh Kroenke seeing Arteta as the man to lead the club into the future.
