NUFC now want England int’l midfielder as their top target, will face Spurs’ battle for ‘most intelligent player’ - report

Newcastle United are tracking Lille midfielder Angel Gomes as they plot a January transfer, but they face fierce competition from Premier League rivals Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur for the services of the 24-year-old, according to the Sun.

Borussia Dortmund are also keen on the former Manchester United player who made his England debut in the win over Ireland last Saturday before starting against Finland three days later.

However, a return to the Premier League could be more appealing to Gomes, and Newcastle have now made the versatile Lille star their top target.

Dubbed by former Lille manager Paulo Fonseca as the ‘most intelligent player’ in his team back in April, the Red Devils academy graduate has unfinished business in the Premier League after failing to impress at Man United before leaving for the French club in 2021.

He is out of contract next summer and could be available for a decent fee in January, which could give the Magpies a chance to land him.

However, joining either Spurs or the Reds could make more sense to Gomes, especially if the duo can offer him regular playing time and the chance to win major silverware.

Some clubs watched the Lille star against Finland on Tuesday and Newcastle could have to battle more suitors for a chance to land the Englishman during the winter transfer window.

Signing him as a free agent in the summer would be tougher for the Toons, and they may have to be willing to table a juicy bid in January just to convince Lille to sell.

Newcastle sporting director Paul Mitchell could be keen to make major recruitment in January after failing to sign any player following his arrival in July, and signing Gomes for manager Eddie Howe could see him get into his good books.
