After an incredible season under Xabi Alonso, many expected Leverkusen’s squad to be dismantled in the summer, but the German club have managed to keep hold of their star players.
Indeed, the vultures are still circling around the Bundesliga champions, and apparently, Florian Wirtz wants to leave the club next year.
Speaking on the FC Bayern Insider Podcast, Christian Falk has been discussing Wirtz’s situation, and he says that Arsenal are a major competitor in the race to sign the German international, stating that they have a concrete interest in the player.
“Arsenal also have Wirtz on their radar, is that true or not true?” Falk was asked.
“That’s true. Arsenal are a major competitor. Arsenal have had Florian Wirtz on their radar for a long time.
“They watched him as a youth player at Koln, and now the interest is becoming really concrete again. However, I have my doubts that they will be able to do this deal. Leverkusen are calling for €150m (£125m). Will Arsenal pay that much? I am sceptical.”
“I see Arsenal as underdogs. Manchester City have to deal with a shock injury, Rodri has been injured and he is crucial for this team.”
Florian Wirtz is too expensive
Florian Wirtz would be an incredible addition to any team in world football, but, as Falk says, it’s hard to see Arsenal doing this deal.
Indeed, the Gunners rarely break that £100m barrier for any player, let alone someone who plays in a position that doesn’t need strengthening.
Arsenal already have Martin Odegaard in that number 10 role, and as good as Wirtz is, it’s hard to see him displacing Arsenal’s club captain anytime soon.
This is a deal that seems very unlikely from the get go.
