'This is why': Fabrizio Romano shares the reason why Arsenal didn't sign a new striker this summer

Arsenal were one of the Premier League’s busiest clubs on transfer deadline day as they wrapped up a number of deals in the last few hours before the window shut.

In terms of incomings at the Emirates Stadium, Brazil goalkeeper Neto and England winger Raheem Sterling joined the Gunners on loan from Bournemouth and Chelsea respectively.

There were also several outgoings, Aaron Ramsdale joined Southampton permanently, Eddie Nketiah signed for Crystal Palace, and Reiss Nelson linked up with Fulham on loan.

Earlier in the summer, Arsenal signed Italy international defender Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna and also landed Spain’s Euro 2024 champion Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad.

However, one squad area the Gunners didn’t manage to strengthen is at centre-forward, with no new strikers having arrived at N5.

Fabrizio Romano has now explained why Arsenal didn’t sign a new centre-forward in the summer transfer window.
Arsenal don’t sign players ‘for the sake of it’
Romano, writing on CaughtOffside, said Arsenal aren’t the kind of club that will sign players for the sake of it.

The transfer insider suggested there was nobody that the Gunners coaches and hierarchy fancied after missing out on Benjamin Sesko.

“I think Arsenal had a very good window,” Romano said.

“Signing David Raya on a permanent deal, Raheem Sterling was a good last minute opportunity, Riccardo Calafiori a fantastic signing. Mikel Merino also a very good addition, strongly wanted by Arteta.

“Arsenal don’t sign players for the sake of it and this is why they didn’t sign a striker after missing out on Benjamin Sesko, who decided early on in the summer to sign a new contract with RB Leipzig.”

Mikel Arteta hoping to be proven right once again
Arteta has made numerous controversial decisions during his time at Arsenal that have been proven right eventually.

For instance, he has frozen out numerous high-profile players, something which always splits the fanbase, but in the end, things worked out for the better.

Arsenal’s squad is not only strong, but the dressing room is united, and there has been improvement with each passing season at N5.

The Gunners not signing a centre-forward has proven a bit controversial this time round, but it’s not as though they’re not well stocked in attack.
