Video: Big blow for Arsenal as Martin Odegaard suffers ankle injury on Int'L duty

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard was substituted on international duty after twisting his ankle.

The Norway international played the full 90 minutes against Kazakhstan last week. He was once again in the starting line-up against Austria tonight.

The 25-year-old was unable to make any impact in the final third and he was eventually substituted in the 67th minute after suffering an ankle knock.

Odegaard went off the field limping and grimacing in pain. This is a huge blow for the Gunners ahead of their north London derby against Tottenham Hotspur.

Odegaard has been a huge influence for the Gunners from the number 10 position. His distribution and link-up play in the final third has contributed to the club’s progress.

The club captain will be assessed over the coming days. The Gunners faithful will be hoping that he can recover in time for Sunday’s visit of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Alongside Odegaard, summer signing Riccardo Calafiori is also facing a race to be fit for the derby.

The Italian centre-back suffered a freak injury in the Nations League win over France. Arsenal believe he has only suffered a knock and could recover in time to face Spurs.

Gunners manager Mikel Arteta could have a huge selection headache on his hands if Odegaard is absent.

The club are already without Declan Rice in midfield due to suspension while Mikel Merino won’t return until the back end of October after suffering a shoulder fracture.

Arsenal teenager Ethan Nwaneri could be a wildcard option to start in the Gunners midfield.
