Riccardo Calafiori was the flagship signing of Arsenal’s summer, a player who Mikel Arteta has preferred to introduce slowly thus far.
Although, Calafiori may start in the North London derby, a baptism of fire he seems ready for given his performance for Italy against France over the break – that’s if he can overcome his minor knock.
Otherwise, Arsenal concluded a permanent deal for David Raya, welcomed Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad and executed loan deals for Raheem Sterling and Neto on deadline day.
Edu strengthened the depth of Arteta’s squad, and Sterling in particular could prove to be a very clever addition at the last minute.
Piers Morgan thinks Arsenal should have signed Cristiano Ronaldo this summer
A rather high-profile Arsenal fan these days, Piers Morgan has shared his review on the club’s summer spending on talkSPORT.
Morgan lamented Arsenal’s decision to veto a move for a new striker, saying he has concerns about Kai Havertz.
And when concluding his argument, he mentioned that Arsenal should have made a move for Cristiano Ronaldo, a 39-year-old who Manchester United paid £13m to sign in 2021, before he eventually then joined Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia.

Morgan said: “I do remain disappointed we have not gone out and got a proper centre-forward striker. I don’t think Kai Havertz is that guy. I hope it doesn’t come back to haunt us.
“I think we have got the best squad we have had in 20 years. I think we have got the best defence and goalkeeper in world football and we have got back-ups for that defence. We have got six or seven guys at the back who are going to be utterly impregnable.
“Have we got someone that can compete against City, led by Haaland, who looks absolutely electric this season? I don’t think we do, and it worries me that in the big games when we get those big chances like we did last season, home and away against Bayern Munich, the second game against Villa when it really matters that we get those chances.
“You know who I would really love upfront for us? Cristiano Ronaldo.”
Signing Ronaldo would be a ludicrous decision for Arsenal
Of course, there’s almost no merit to the idea of Arsenal signing Ronaldo this summer, who wouldn’t have been available even if there were sufficient interest.
Ronaldo is now 39 as mentioned, and left Man United because it wasn’t quite working for him back in the Premier League as first expected.
Whilst it’s not wrong to suggest that Arsenal would benefit from a new striker, Ronaldo is certainly not the player Arteta needs nor wants.
Arsenal opted not to sign Ivan Toney partly because they were worried that his personality may not suit their dressing room right now.
And it therefore seems reasonable to conclude that the Portuguese legend may be considered in a similar vein, a player would understandably arrive with his own ideas.
