Calafiori, Saka, Odegaard - Latest Arsenal injury news and return dates before Liverpool clash

Mikel Arteta has been handed a fresh injury worry alongside the tense wait on Bukayo Saka and Jurrien Timber for the upcoming Premier League clash against Liverpool. The Arsenal duo were again absent because of injury for the Champions League victory over Shakhtar Donetsk, having also missed the previous weekend's loss at Bournemouth.

Club captain Martin Odegaard also missed the clash on the south coast as he continues to recover from an ankle injury, with a return in mid-November the expected outcome. The Norway international has been able to offer an update on the work he is doing while absent, with hope that his return can arrive soon.

Saka, Timber, Odegaard - Arsenal injury news and return dates for Shakhtar Champions League tie
Amid that triple absence, Arteta has been handed yet another fitness concern, with Riccardo Calafiori taken off in the second half against Shakhtar because of an injury problem. The Italy international fell awkwardly on his knee and, despite attempting to, was unable to play on and thus replaced by Myles Lewis-Skelly.

With that said, football.london has rounded up the latest Arsenal injury news and potential return dates before the major title showdown at home to Liverpool.

Riccardo Calafiori
Injury: Knee

Calafiori was forced off with an injury during the Champions League clash at home to Shakhtar Donetsk after slipping in a challenge.

What Arteta has said: "With Riccy he had to come off because he felt something. I don’t know the extent of it but it’s not good news."

Possible return date: Unknown

Bukayo Saka
Injury: Hamstring.

Saka suffered a hamstring injury during England's defeat to Greece in the Nations League last Thursday. There was hope he could feature against Bournemouth one week later, but Mikel Arteta made the decision to leave him out of the squad.

What Arteta has said: "At the moment I'm not very helpful. Let's see. We still have a few days. He wasn't able to train yet so that's unlikely [playing vs Liverpool]."

Possible return date: Unknown

Jurrien Timber
Injury: Unknown.

Timber was substituted at half-time during Arsenal's win over Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League and was left out of the matchday squad to face Southampton. The defender was then omitted from the Netherlands squad for Nations League matches against Hungary and Germany.

Like Saka, he was not named in the matchday squad to face Bournemouth, with further doubt cast over his availability going forward. Timber was not seen taking part in the open training session on Monday afternoon either and he therefore missed the Champions League fixture at home to Shakhtar Donetsk.

What Arteta has said: "I think he's going to be close obviously. We have to see how he deals with training with the whole group because he hasn't done that yet but he will be pretty close hopefully."

Possible return date: Liverpool (H) - Premier League - October 27

Martin Odegaard
Injury: Ankle.

Odegaard suffered an ankle injury during the Nations League match against Austria in September. He has missed the last five weeks and was ruled out of the Bournemouth clash, with Arteta revealing the next few days will be crucial in his recovery. In his latest programme notes, Odegaard delivered a fresh injury update.

What Arteta has said: "They [Saka and Odegaard] are closer and they're both progressing really well. Martin is still not fit. With Bukayo, let's see how he feels today and the transition that we have later on."

What Odegaard said: "I’m feeling better and better each day, but when it’s an ankle injury you have ups and downs as well. Some days you feel really good, and then sometimes you can have a little reaction. But in general it’s getting better and I feel like I’m getting closer now.

"I’ve been doing a lot of work in the gym, and was on an anti-gravity treadmill recently, which is really good because it takes the weight off. Especially at the beginning that was really good, to be running again like that when you’ve been offloading the leg and not using it as much as normal.

"That was a good feeling, helping me get back to moving in a normal way, and being able to run after not being able to do that."

Possible return date: Chelsea (A) - Premier League - November 10.

Takehiro Tomiyasu
Injury: Unknown.

Tomiyasu was again absent from the matchday squad having also missed the weekend defeat to Bournemouth.

What Arteta has said: "We don’t know (how long he will be out for). It doesn’t look like, hopefully, a long period but we have to see when he comes back how he reacts to the load and to the impact on the pitch as well.

"But we really need him, he has been incredible, his work rate, the amount of hours he has put in to get back. He did it and he was in great shape - and now he has got something else again. But, we are all behind him. He needs our support and hopefully he will be fine."

Possible return date: Unknown

Kieran Tierney
Injury: Hamstring.

Tierney remains out of action after suffering a horrible hamstring injury while playing for Scotland at Euro 2024. He is yet to return to training having been expected to leave the club over the summer.

What Arteta has said: "He needs to focus on recovering in the best possible way as it's been a tough time for him again with the last injury. We have to try to support him and make sure he gets back fit."
