Dermot Gallagher issues verdict on Arsenal, Chelsea and Crystal Palace decisions as 'FA to decide' claim made

Gabriel Martinelli completed Arsenal’s comeback against Southampton, ghosting in at the back post to make it 2-1. There were some claims that Mikel Merino may have interfered with the play after the ball went over his head and dropped at Martinelli’s feet.

But according to Gallagher, the Spaniard did not have a realistic opportunity to play the ball. He reasoned: “Merino can't ever play the ball, it's so far above him. It's quite rightly given as a goal.”

Chelsea and Nottingham Forest played out a heated and entertaining 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, and during the game, there was a brawl of sorts between the two sets of players after Marc Cucurella was fouled near the sideline.

“When you see that situation, you pick out what you can with your colleagues and VAR. If there's anything left the FA will intervene afterwards,” Gallagher said. Replays have since shown that Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson slapped a Forest player on the face, and he could now face a retrospective ban, according to the former referee. He added: “This camera angle wasn't available yesterday to the VAR. The argument could be it hasn't been checked by the VAR and this is a new angle - it's up to the FA to decide what to do.”

Palace penalty claim
Crystal Palace felt they should have been awarded a penalty when Vigil van Dijk pulled Marc Guehi in the box during the Eagles’ narrow 1-0 defeat to Liverpool. But Gallagher says the Premier League are being deliberately careful with these sorts of incidents.

He said: “Two things they've worked on this season is that it's got to be sustained holding and it's got to have impact. They felt that it had no impact because it wouldn't go to Guehi.”
