The Magpies have fallen to 9th in the table in recent weeks having gone four games without a win. Almost seven hours of football has passed since United last scored a goal in open play.
Since beating Wolverhampton Wanderers on September 15, Newcastle have drawn with Manchester City and Everton, and lost to Fulham and Brighton & Hove Albion. Last weekend’s 1-0 defeat to Brighton was the club’s first home defeat since January.
The games don’t get any easier. Howe’s men head to Chelsea on Sunday afternoon before hosting the same opposition in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday. Title challengers Arsenal then visit St James’ Park with a trip to Nottingham Forest completing the next batch of fixtures.
