Liverpool icon makes bold Trent Alexander-Arnold transfer statement as clear successor named

Former Match of the Day pundit and Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson believes this will be Trent Alexander-Arnold’s final season at Anfield as the defender’s future remains up in the air.

The right-back is one of three big name stars in the final year of their contract, as Mohamed Salah and captain Virgil van Dijk also face uncertainty surrounding their futures. All three have played an integral role in Liverpool’s strong start to the season under new head coach Arne Slot, but none of them appear to be any closer to committing their futures to the Reds.

Lawrenson, who made over 350 appearances for the club during his playing days, has delivered his verdict on Alexander-Arnold’s future, and believes the 26-year-old is bound for Real Madrid and La Liga. Speaking to Gambling.com as part of their weekly panel show, the pundit also explained why the defender’s potential exit wouldn’t be the end of the world for Liverpool.

“I think Trent will let his contract run out,” Lawrenson said. “I think the world knows, and it's probably the worst-kept secret in the world, that his big mate [Jude Bellingham] plays for Real Madrid.

“He's an intelligent boy, very well schooled. He might just turn around and go, ‘you know what boys, I'm going to go and play in Spain’. Because why not?

“Because don’t they win the Champions League every year, to widen your horizons, all those other kinds of things. It's only a gut thing but I hear it more and more often now that they might have already had a conversation. So I wouldn't be surprised.

“Conor Bradley looks like he's going to be a really good player as well in Trent's position. So it wouldn't be the end of the world, would it?”

Alexander-Arnold made his senior debut for Liverpool in October 2016, and he has gone on to make over 320 appearances for the club across all competitions. He last signed a contract extension in the summer of 2021, a four-year deal that is set to expire in a little under 10 months.

With Liverpool, the right back has won the Premier League, the Champions League, two League Cups and the FA Cup. He also helped the Reds win both the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup back in 2019.
