Liverpool 'monitoring' Virgil van Dijk successor as free transfer battle emerges

Liverpool are said to be in the market for two new centre-backs - according to reports and transfer speculation. The Reds have just over two months before they are able to strengthen their squad once again in the New Year.

Arne Slot added one new player to his inherited Liverpool squad this summer, with Federico Chiesa arriving from Juventus in a £12.5million move. Giorgi Mamardashvili has also been signed from Valencia, but the goalkeeper will not touch down at Anfield until next summer - while he remains with the La Liga side.

It remains to be seen what transfer business, if any, Liverpool plan to conduct when the window re-opens. But, if the latest speculation is anything to go by, then it could be a busy few months in the run-up to 2025.

But where will Slot and FSG make their move? The ECHO has taken a closer look at some of the latest Liverpool transfer news and rumours to generate headlines over the last 24 hours;

Liverpool are being linked with a move for Sevilla defender Loic Bade. According to Spanish news outlet Mundo Deportivo, the Reds have "identified" Bade as a potential long-term successor to Virgil van Dijk.

The report claims that Liverpool are "monitoring" the centre-back for the summer transfer window in 2025. It has been stated that Sevilla have set a minimum asking price of £16.7million (€20million) and could even ask for more by the time next summer rolls around - depending on how the player develops.

Bade was linked with a move away from Sevilla this summer, with Liverpool reported to be interested. However, the defender instead chose to remain in La Liga and extended his contract until 2029.

Elsewhere, Liverpool are being linked with a swoop for Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the Reds are one of several clubs weighing-up trying to sign Tah on a free transfer in 2025.

Tah's contract at Leverkusen is set to expire at the end of the season, and he was heavily linked with a move to Bayern Munich before the transfer window closed. Now, it seems that Liverpool are among a host of teams that could try and sign Tah next year, but they will not have a clean pathway.

The report claims that the Reds are joined by Italian side Inter Milan and Bayern in the race to sign Tah. The centre-back helped Leverkusen win the Bundesliga title last season and has made ten appearances in all competitions, so far this term, keeping his place in the starting XI despite lingering transfer rumours.
