Liverpool set to complete shock deal for less than £17m

Liverpool are pondering over several scenarios they want to visit in the summer but it seems almost certain that they will look to bring in a striker before the start of the 2025/26 season.

The Merseyside giants sit second in the Premier League table but work is underway behind the scenes to identify positions they need to strengthen at the end of the season.

Liverpool are expected to bring in defenders if Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold move on and a wide forward will become a big priority if Mohamed Salah doesn’t sign a new contract.

The Reds are also keen to bring in a new striker given Darwin Nunez’s struggles this season and the club have been scouring the market for options.

Signing a striker is not a cheap undertaking and Liverpool are already expected to invest heavily on defenders and wide forwards given the state of their squad.

The club are keeping tabs on cost-effective options such as Jonathan David who is available on a free transfer next summer.

However, the club could get a striker from a Premier League club for a low fee as well if the cards fall in the right place.

Liverpool target could be available for less than £20m

The Merseyside giants are looking at Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta as a credible option for next season.

He was in pristine form last term and Liverpool admire the physicality and Premier League experience he could bring to Arne Slot’s squad.

Mateta would have been expensive last summer but with Palace and his struggles this season, coupled with the state of his contract, he could be available for a small fee next year.

Can you name the clubs Liverpool signed these players from?

According to transfermarkt, Palace could be forced to sell him for as low as £17m at the end of the season.

He will only have a year left on his contract next summer and has not shown any penchant for signing a new deal with the club.

A move to Liverpool would appeal to him as it would be a step up to one of the big boys of the Premier League from Palace.

Liverpool are expected to monitor his performances for the next few months before making any concrete plans to sign him next summer.
