'Move on' - Alexander Isak contract warning to Newcastle as Arsenal and Chelsea eye transfer

The prospect of Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon being awarded new contracts has certainly divided opinion among Newcastle supporters.

Isak remains in talks with Newcastle over extending his contract, with the current terms set to expire in 2028. Gordon's deal runs out in 2026, but is thought to be closing in on agreeing fresh terms to extend his stay at St James Park.

Gordon was heavily linked with a move to Liverpool during the summer transfer window. Isak, meanwhile, has been credited as a target for Arsenal and Chelsea, but Newcastle are determined to keep the duo at the club beyond their current deals.

With new contracts, both Isak and Gordon could be in line for salary increases to recognise their continued importance to the team. Isak is said to be currently earning £120,000 per week, and there have been suggestions that Newcastle could hand Gordon and the Sweden international a pay increase that seems them earn a weekly wage of £200,000 - more than Bruno Guimareas, the best-paid player currently.

Chronicle Live reported this speculation earlier this week, which led to plenty of comments from readers. A large number of the comments centred around whether or not Isak and Gordon deserve to be earning £200,000 per week at Newcastle.

"None of our players, including Isak, are worth £200,000 at the moment," MrHawkingsFootballBoots2 wrote: "They need to show some consistency and start winning silverware first before demanding those kind of figures. What have they actually achieved? There are multiple Man City players on less than £200k and they have actually won multiple trophies."

Another reader, earlgray, wrote: "I don't care how gifted a footballer is, none are worth £200,000 per week. It is an obscene amount, especially when many can only use one foot."

With the topic of a footballer's salary up for discussion, the Chronicle are inviting fans to cast their vote on our last survey. Do you think Isak and Gordon deserve to see their annual wages increase to £200,000, or should Newcastle be stricter with the contracts they hand out?

Isak has scored just one goal for Newcastle across his six appearances so far this season but has missed the last three fixtures with a toe injury. Gordon has two goals to his name across his seven appearances in the Premier League, including the equaliser from the penalty spot in last month's 1-1 draw with Manchester City.

KMac said: "I like Isak but don’t understand why he feels the need to be the highest paid player at the club, sounds like he is holding the club to ransom? Just pay it and move on, footballers have a short earning career, if he won’t sign then let him go."

DurbanSkyslot wrote: "I love Isak but his injuries for a start put me straight off giving him that sort of money!"

But Alberni added: "I know it’s a lot of money, but keep in mind how short the career of a good player can be. The career may be very short, owing to injury."
