'Not what you were brought in for' - Jurrien Timber told to make change to save Arsenal career by former Chelsea Defender

Former Chelsea defender Khalid Boulahrouz has warned Jurrien Timber that his versatility may hold him back at Arsenal.

The Dutch defender, who signed from Ajax for an initial fee of £34 million in the summer of 2023, made just three appearances for the Gunners last season. The Dutch international damaged his ACL in Arsenal's Premier League clash with Nottingham Forest in August 2023 and would miss the majority of the campaign.

He'd make his long-awaited return for Mikel Arteta's side in the Gunners' final game of the 2023/24 campaign at Everton, replacing Ben White as a second-half substitute at the Emirates. It's been a much brighter campaign for Timber this time round, making eight appearances in all competitions so far this season.

Timber started the Gunners' Champions League win over PSG at right-back, but has featured at left-back this season - a position he himself admitted was new to him. Speaking at the pre-match press conference ahead of the game, Timber revealed he was a little surprised to be playing in that position, he said: "It happened in the preparation. For the friendly against Barcelona I think.

"In training I played left back out of nowhere. Then I thought: okay, there is a chance that I have to play left back tomorrow. And that's okay, I just do my thing and have fun. I'm happy when I play. I think it's good to be versatile and to be able to play in different positions."

However, former Blues defender Boulahrouz believes Timber should be operating at centre-half or at right-back, having earned his stripes with Ajax prior to his move to Arsenal.
