‘They said’: Jermain Defoe shares what people inside Arsenal have told him about Kai Havertz

The striker was, once again, amongst the goals at the weekend against Southampton, taking his tally to four for the season already.
Havertz is his side’s top scorer at the moment, but the feeling within Arsenal is that his game is about so much more than just goals.

Indeed, speaking on The Weekend Wrap, Jermain Defoe has been discussing Havertz’s recent form, and he’s shared what people within Arsenal have told him about the German.

Defoe says that the view within Arsenal is that while Havertz is a great goalscorer, he actually brings a lot more to the team than just goals.

“I think he’s so much more than just a goalscorer. We spoke before about how hard he works and I’ve spoken to a few of the guys at Arsenal, and they said that he scores goals but he does so much more for the team,” Defoe said.

“A big part of the game now is build-up, but sometimes Arsenal go long and when they do he’s a focal point, he holds it up and wins headers. He has a bit of everything.”

Kai Havertz’s positioning is ‘amazing’
Defoe says that Havertz is about more than just goals, and he’s right.

“He is amazing. I think that his quality is to know where to be at the right time. And that counts for even the big number nines I played with,” Seedorf said.

“They are never static in front. They would just find the position, make the defenders fall asleep a little bit and then all of a sudden, they present themselves. I think that’s a big quality he has.”

Havertz knows how to put the ball in the net, but he also knows how to occupy defenders and create space for his teammates.

There’s a reason Arsenal’s goals are so spread within the team, the likes of Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard have all been among the goals this season, and that’s somewhat because of the work Havertz does off the ball.

Being a striker in this Arsenal team is about more than just scoring goals, and Havertz’s all-round game is a key factor in the Gunners’ current title tilt.
