Arsenal's poor start compared to pace set by last 10 Premier League champions as Man City offer hope

Mikel Arteta’s men have just 19 points from their first 11 games, and they will return after the break knowing they have little margin for error going forward, already knowing they need Liverpool to hit a sticky patch of their own.
With Arsenal’s title chances already in serious doubt, we have taken a look at the last 10 Premier League seasons to see if there is any hope for the Gunners to latch on to. Specifically, we have taken a look at what points totals each of the last 10 Premier League champions had after 11 games to see how Arsenal’s current total of 19 compares.

It’s also worth noting that in the last two seasons, Arsenal have racked up 24 and 28 points respectively, and they were not able to win the title in those two seasons.

Last 10 champions after 11 games
Manchester City have won the last four Premier League titles, and the first of those four provides the biggest hope for Arsenal. In the 2020/21 season, City only had 19 points at this stage - the same total as Arsenal have currently. In the remaining three seasons, the Citizens have clocked up 23, 26 and most recently 27 points at this stage.

In Liverpool’s sole Premier League-winning campaign, they had 31 points at this stage, three points more than they lead the league with presently. City won the two previous titles, racking up 29 points and 31 points after 11 games in those seasons.

Going further back, Chelsea had 25 points at this stage in the 2016/17 season, and one season earlier, Leicester City had the second lowest total at this stage of the last 10 champions with 22 points. Chelsea boasted a more impressive 29 points after 11 games in the season before.

On average, the last 10 Premier League champions have racked up 26.2 points from their first 11 games, which is just over seven points more than Arsenal have at this stage.

What Arteta has said about Arsenal’s position
Asked about where the weekend’s Chelsea draw leaves Arsenal, Arteta said: “There is nothing we can change today about that. What I am just praying is that after the international break I have the team fully equipped physically, they are available and they are fit because it has been an absolute nightmare for eight weeks.

“Issue after issue, not only the ones that are not able to play, but the ones that are able to play only for certain moments, only for certain days, not able to train. So I’m just asking that because the team, the desire that they have and how much we want it, there’s no question about that. So, it’s going to come, we just need that on our side to be able to be more consistent.”

Asked about what Arsenal need to do, the Spaniard added: “Win, win and win because these guys, they don’t stop winning, so that’s what we have to do.”
