Edu has been a key figure behind Arsenal's resurgence in recent years, forming an important partnership with manager Mikel Arteta to help transform the club back into title challengers. However, the Brazilian is now set to leave Arsenal following talks with club chiefs.
During Edu's time at the Emirates, Arsenal have twice finished runner-up in the league behind Manchester City. And in an interview ahead of the current campaign, Edu outlined why it is so important to him that Arsenal enjoy success by doing things the "right way".
Speaking on the Men in Blazers podcast back in August, Edu said: "Of course we want to win titles. Of course we want to bring trophies here to this football club, but how we are going to bring them is the most important thing for me.
"I want to compete with someone as I am competing internally. I want to win in the best way possible. I want to win and get the trophy and I want people to look to us and say, 'I feel proud of you guys because you're winning the right way'.
"I'm not talking about anyone else here, I'm talking about ourselves and how to win, how to lose, how to draw and how to get a trophy. For me, this makes a lot of sense. It doesn't matter that we didn't get a trophy last season, but ask every single fan of Arsenal what they feel about us.
"That, for me, is important. They have to feel proud of us and how we are working because we live in sports. Sometimes you are going to win and sometimes you are going to lose, but how is important.
"We didn't get a trophy last year, but I feel proud and we have to feel proud of ourselves and everything we put in. This is what I love to do and I feel proud to do. That's the direction that we, as a club, have to go always."
Arsenal could still win a first league title since 2004 this season, but they are already seven points behind top of the table Liverpool and five behind reigning champions City after failing to win any of their last three matches.
