Pep Guardiola's side now sit five points behind Liverpool after having lost five consecutive games in all competitions. Should the Reds beat Southampton on Sunday, they will go eight points clear of City - who they welcome to Anfield next weekend.

However, despite Liverpool being able to go 11 points clear if they beat Southampton and Man City, they will follow that up with tough away tests against Newcastle United and Everton. But, speaking on Sky Sports, Carragher reckons the Reds have done a good job beating the teams they should beat, which has set them up nicely for their upcoming big games.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Carragher said: "He's never going to say it's more significant (to win when City lose) but when you're in the game you know it's a great position to find yourself in. Eight points ahead of Manchester City and playing them at Anfield where notoriously Liverpool have done well in the past. It's a really big one for Liverpool.

It's a really tough week after this one so make sure you do your job here and get the points in the bag, and who knows what'll happen over the next few games?"
