Mikel Arteta paying price for transfer mistake as Piers Morgan launches Arsenal rant

Piers Morgan has hit out at Mikel Arteta for failing to sign a "proper striker" in the wake of Arsenal's draw with Chelsea.

The Gunners headed into Sunday's huge derby clash needing a win after ceding ground in the title race over recent weeks. And while Gabriel Martinelli fired them into a second half lead, they left Stamford Bridge with just a point after drawing 1-1.

Arsenal head into the international break nine points behind Liverpool at the Premier League summit - a gap some believe will be too much to bridge in the coming months.

Morgan was quick to express his disappointment on social media after Sunday's match. And he made no secret that he felt the lack of a prolific No.9 was to blame for Arsenal's failure to plunder all three points.

Referencing a late miss by Leandro Trossard, who was eventually flagged offside, Morgan fumed: "Absolute sitter missed at the death. God, we need a proper striker so badly. Why can’t Arteta see this??"

Arsenal ended the 2023/24 campaign with Kai Havertz playing as a striker and the Germany international did find some form. The club were keen on signing Benjamin Sesko in the summer, only for the Slovenia star to sign a new contract with Red Bull Leipzig.

Reports in Germany over the weekend claimed that Sesko has a 'gentleman's agreement' with RB Leipzig which could see him leave next summer, despite the fact he signed a contract until 2029. It remains to be seen, though, if Arsenal would rekindle their interest in the highly-rated 21-year-old.

Arteta saw his side drop more points in the title race on Sunday
Despite dropping more points in the title race, Arteta insisted he was happy with how his team performed post-match. He told Match of the Day: “I am very disappointed but very proud as well with what I have seen from the team again. We did the most difficult one to score the first goal but very disappointed with the way we conceded.

"The standards and our defensive habits were nowhere near. They have quality and if you give them space they are going to punish you.

"The team reacted in a way that was fabulous with the desire to win, show initiative, take risks and be so dominant but we didn’t manage to score the [winning] goal.

“They destroy every team that comes here in every way but I thought we were superb. We were very unlucky. We have dominated one of the best teams in Europe but we don’t get the results. That is what is missing.”
