‘Rare talent’ - Mikel Arteta ready to unleash secret weapon on Newcastle United amid injury crisis

Gunners fans have been raving about the 17-year-old following his Carabao Cup heroics in midweek. Nwaneri bagged in Arsenal’s 3-0 win over Preston North End, taking his tally to three in the competition and booking a quarter-final clash with Crystal Palace.
The North London club predict big things for the England under-19 international, who can play as a midfielder, out wide or up front. Arteta handed Nwaneri his debut two years ago aged 15 - making him the youngest Arsenal and top-flight player ever.

The Spaniard heaped praise on the prospect before his side travel to St James’ Park. Arteta said: “I can talk about how good he is right now. At 17, to be in the position he is at one of the biggest clubs in Europe shows the quality he has.

“What happens in the future will depend on how much he wants it. My prediction for him is very positive. It’s rare to see a talent like this at 17, that's true.

“When we gave him his debut at 15 there was a lot of talk about it but we didn’t do it as a gift. We did it as proof of a pathway and how much we wanted to keep him.”

Arteta also confirmed he will be without Martin Odegaard and Riccardo Calafiori, while Ben White is a doubt. Gabriel was an injury doubt following a rash challenge from Darwin Nunez last week but should be fine for Newcastle.

“Riccy (Calafiori) and Martin (Odegaard) are definitely out,” Arteta added. “With Ben, we don’t know yet. He could not train so let’s see what happens. It's good news on Gabriel. We have a training session today. If he’s able to do that he’ll be in the squad.”
