Report: Manchester City could now move for £58m Liverpool target after latest defeat

Liverpool enjoyed a dream Premier League weekend with the Reds winning at Anfield and Manchester City losing a second league game in a row to Brighton & Hove Albion.

The results this weekend mean Liverpool go five points clear at the top of the standings, with City enduring one of their worst runs of form under Pep Guardiola with the reigning English champions losing their last four in all competitions.

With Alexis Mac Allister saying the Liverpool squad knew about City’s result going into Saturday night’s clash with Aston Villa, the Reds seem more motivated than ever to push for the Premier League title having last won it in 2020.

Yet for City, the Manchester giants could now be about to move for a Liverpool target to fix their issues.

Manchester City eyeing Liverpool-linked Federico Valverde
According to CaughtOffside, City are weighing up a move to sign Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde, with the English giants considering a €70m (£58m) move for the Uruguay international.

Valverde has been linked with Liverpool with the 26-year-old Los Blancos star having a release clause worth €1bn, with the South American maestro considered a key player for Madrid under Carlo Ancelotti.

With City losing Rodri for the season due to an ACL injury, though, a move for a world-class midfielder in Valverde would make a lot of sense for Guardiola’s side heading into the January transfer window.

Yet for Liverpool, City signing Valverde would come across as a titanic blow for Arne Slot’s side and their chances of winning the Premier League, with the Reds simply not having the resources to compete with their Manchester rivals.

What do Liverpool need to do in the January transfer market?
Having made just one signing for this season in the summer in the form of Federico Chiesa, Liverpool know they need to be active in the January transfer market if they’re to build from their excellent start to the campaign.

And signing a central midfielder will do just that, with Liverpool linked with LOSC Lille star Ayyoub Bouaddi as Wataru Endo looks to seek an exit from Anfield having hardly played this season under Slot.

Indeed, Liverpool need to be focused on adding bodies to their midfield this January with an extra central defender also needed heading into 2025, and the Reds are fully aware that rival teams like City will also be spending big when the new year ticks over.
