Arsenal in talks over Wolves signing

Jeorge Bird reports that talks are ongoing between Arsenal and Wolves over a move for Lennon Patterson, with the Gunners interested in signing the young defender.

Patterson recently played for Arsenal on a trial basis, playing with the first team in training before making a start for the u21s in a Premier League 2 fixture against Sunderland.

That was Arsenal’s final academy fixture before the winter break, so there haven’t been any further opportunities to give Patterson minutes on the pitch. But the club have evidently seen enough to begin talks over a transfer.

Patterson spent time with the Arsenal senior squad a few times in December, having also played for Brighton on another trial in October. A move away from Wolves seems very likely, it was just a matter of finding the right club and agreeing a deal.

Before his trial appearance for Brighton, Patterson had made around 30 appearances for Wolves’ u18s, dating back to his debut at that level in April 2022.

But the defender is still waiting for his first chance with the Wolves u21s two -and-a-half years later, which is perhaps part of the reason why he’s now looking to move on

It’s not unusual for youth players to hold trials at multiple clubs before making a decision on their future, so there are no guarantees that Arsenal become Patterson’s next club. That will depend on how negotiations go.

On the other hand, Brayden Clarke made the same switch from Wolves earlier this year, so the two clubs are evidently capable of finding a compromise in these situations.
