Earlier in the week, it was reported that Hansi Flick is pushing for reinforcements in the midfield unit, as he looks to add a backup for Marc Casado.
While a January deal might be difficult to pull off, Barça are open to signing cost-effective options even in the summer.
Thomas Partey on Barcelona’s radar
Keeping that in mind, Barcelona are keeping tabs on Thomas Partey, whose contract at Arsenal expires at the end of the season.
This is according to Mundo Deportivo, who suggest Barça sporting director Deco has been monitoring his progress for a long time.
Barcelona’s interest in Partey comes on the back of uncertainty kicking in over the future of Frenkie de Jong.
The Dutchman’s contract expires in 2026 and Barcelona fear he may opt to run down his contract and leave the club as a free agent.
The Blaugrana, therefore, are exploring a sale for de Jong. And in order to fill in the Dutchman’s shoes, the club must secure the services of a new midfielder.
Partey fits the bill perfectly due to his power and ability to circulate possession in the middle of the park. Not to mention, he brings significant experience to the table, having featured in over 100 matches in La Liga and Premier League.
Partey is also rated highly due to his versatility as he can not only operate in the double-pivot but also the right-back position, thus making him a potential alternative to Jules Kounde.
Barcelona, therefore, are expected to try and sign Partey on a free transfer, though the club are set to face stiff competition from Arsenal, who are keen on retaining the midfielder’s services.
